Iman Peoples and water, rights, uses and protection of custodial lands and waters
First Nations Culture, Land and natural Waterways are at risk in central Queensland from co- produced water and aquifer depressurization due to the expansion of Coal Seam Gas (CSG) extraction. However, limited research has been conducted to promote and identify Culturally supported scientific methods for water management and allocation in lands and waters affected by CSG. In this talk, I will present a mixed qualitative-quantitative approach whereby
Natural science meets Indigenous mechanisms of inquiry to inform governance and policy change
regarding CSG co – produced water management. I will also discuss impacts of CSG on groundwater, surface waters and connected values. Clint’s research focuses on the Wardingarri/Dawson River catchment (Surat Basin, southeast Queensland), where CSG operations are expanding on the lands of the Iman Peoples. His approach involves community consultation and collaboration with Iman Peoples to develop participatory methods, (e.g. Indigenous-led water monitoring, questionaries’). This will allow First Peoples concerns and knowledge to be adapted/applied to document and protect threatened ecological, cultural, and spiritual values of water sources affected by CSG.
